THE GUERNICA PASSAGE

One structure, thirty years.

232 WORKS · 1990 – 2020

Jeff read a book about how Picasso made Guernica. He considered it the most important painting of the twentieth century — the one that showed what painting could do when history demanded something of it. What drew him to it as a structure for his own work:

“Nice and big. Used it as a direction, a structure to work against.” JEFFREY F. S. NEUMANN

That was sometime around 1990. The series ran for thirty years. The composition — warplanes, compressed bodies, fractured geometry — became a scaffold he could build anything on. The materials changed decade by decade: prism paper, compact discs as halos, vinyl, target forms, found objects from whatever was available. The structure underneath stayed.

What follows is all 232, in order. Walk.

He is still reworking
old Guernica pieces today.
