Eight websites: the galleries that were real

Eight websites · 2000–2021 · Built by hand
Preserved as they were · Still running

One hundred and fifty-nine works in this catalogue are photographs of exhibitions that never happened. These are the galleries that did exist. He built all eight of them himself, between 2000 and 2021: portfolio sites, his own site under a working name, a page made with a grandson. Each is preserved exactly as it was. They still run. Open any of them.

The web’s eras

What the web was doing while he built

Each card is a broad era of web tooling, matched to the sites that fall in it. Select one to jump to them. This is context about the eras, not a record of what any one site was made with; for the sites below, that is stated only where it survives.

Context, not the record
2000s
CSS1 in mainstream, but JavaScript is still toy-level. Tables are grid layout. Mobile web doesn't exist. Speed means dial-up; bandwidth matters.
2010s
Mobile changes everything. Responsive design is new. jQuery dominates. Bootstrap launches 2011. "Flat design" reacts to Retina displays. CSS gains flexbox.
2020s
Frameworks fight it out: React, Vue, Svelte compete. CSS Grid lands. CSS-in-JS becomes standard. The "JavaScript framework as default" moment.
